B.K.—before kids—it was easy to fantasize about being the perfect mom. You know, the one whose children happily devoured broccoli and sandwiches carefully cut into Pinterest-worthy shapes.
Sweet, handwritten notes, would punctuate each school lunch as Little Johnny paraded off to tell his friends how lucky he was to have his mommy.
Then, we became Mamas. And mornings, they can be a bit…hectic.
If your kiddo’s lunch box is a bit, well, borrrring, we’ve got some ideas for you. Here are a few of our favorite healthy school lunch ideas to get you started.
Waffle Sammies and Tacos
Say goodbye to, soggy bread and crumbly shells; say hello to waffles that can hold any goody your kids enjoy.
Hint: Pair with fresh veggies and crumbled cheese.
Fresh Fruit Roll-Ups
For a cold lunch idea your kids will ask for again and again, try strawberries and peanut butter or yogurt wrapped snug in a whole wheat tortilla. Nailed it!
Hint: Pair with peanut butter celery sticks and sliced fruit.
Cherry Tomato and Mozzarella Pasta
Easy to make and delicious even days later, this savory dish can serve as a main course or appetizer when accompanied by another favorite your child will surely enjoy. It’s super delish with whole wheat and/or gluten free pasta.
Hint: Pair with a fresh salad or crusty bread.
Accompanied by fresh fruits and veggies, deviled eggs are a favorite packed lunch idea for kids of all ages. And, bonus, deviled eggs come in tons of flavors.
Spinach and bacon? Yes please. Crab and cheese? Pass those too, please.
Hint: Add a cheese stick for additional protein or pair with a zucchini muffin to sneak in some veggies.
Quinoa Pizza Bites
If your kids are anything like ours, a meal with the word “pizza” makes them come running. Try this alternative to the greasy stuff schools often serve. Bonus: It’s gluten free.
Hint: Who doesn’t love a tasty dipping sauce? Pair with a pizza or pasta sauce, or get adventurous with a little Ranch on the side.
Pizza on a Shell
Much like the taco bar, this one borrows from the famed Lunchables theme and adds a flavorful, healthy twist. Provide a tortilla as the pizza crust, with an assortment of toppings, such as lettuce, corn, and beans, on the side.
Hint: Pair with a milk or fruit smoothie for an extra-filling treat.
Hate the thought of having your children go to school with another PB&J? Don’t worry, we feel you, Mama.
